Composting

OH SO SIMPLE! Composting is VERY easy and provides you with organic matter you can use in your garden and houseplants.

A simple bin with 3 sides, start small and you can always increase the size to your needs.  I personally had an old end table, knocked out bottom (because you DO want it to sit on the ground) and I cut the top off, put hinges on it and drilled holes throughout the whole thing (for air circulation) and put it in the yard.  I have a small compost bucket on my counter for veggie scraps and at the end of the week I put some water in it, take it outside and mix it in my compost pile!  You can also stand up 3 wood pallets and stake into the ground, or 3 poles with chicken wire wrapping 3 sides.  You need one side open (or be able to open) in order to add, remove or mix the pile.  If you have dogs like me, you may want to opt for something with 4 sides where you can open one end when needed.

The only things you need to know to keep it decomposing are:

1.50% green (your kitchen scraps - NO meat or dairy - eggshells are OK) and 50% brown (leaves, or even ripped up newspapers!)
2.It needs to be turned at least once a week to keep the air circulating.
3.It needs to remain damp (like I said, I fill my counter bucket before I dump it on the pile)
4.If you have other detailed or technical questions, I’ve provided links to more detailed sites.

VERMICOMPOSTING

Vermicomposting is composting with worms, yes WORMS!  I actually have them in my house in a worm bin (I live in the desert and they won’t survive outside here).  They DO NOT emit odors, they are self-contained in a worm house, and the secretions and juice are great for plants too!  It is basically the same concept as a composting bin, it’s just that the worms eat my garbage!

I have items for sale in the on-line store and in the links section if you want more detailed information on the subject.
