Although there are MANY cleaning products out there that claim to make your life easier, how many of them are actually healthy for you or the environment? I agree some of them smell fantastic and actually work pretty good, but to what end? So, I started researching natural cleaning alternatives and find that some REALLY work better than chemical laden products available on the market.
I have also started reading labels A LOT! It’s amazing that some things I can’t even pronounce or understand why they are in there! So, I look for laundry and dish soaps that don’t contain phosphorus (since these are harmful to the environment and also to my septic tank which leaks into the ground and contaminates ground water)
Some Natural alternatives (and CHEAP too) that work well: Vinegar Olive Oil Lemons/Oranges Baking Soda Aluminum Foil Newspaper
Here are some simple recipes and tricks:
Toilet cleaning: Pour in about a cup of white vinegar Sprinkle in some baking soda (it will foam!) Put lid down and let sit for ½ hour or so Scrub with scrub brush
Kitchen/Bath counters Mix 50% white vinegar with 50% water in spray bottle Spray down all surfaces (including mirrors) wipe dry Wait till you see everything shine!
Cleaning sterling silver (let me tell you this works better than ANYTHING I have ever used) Cover the bottom of your kitchen sink with a piece of aluminum foil Pour in a couple tablespoons of salt Pour in a couple tablespoons of baking soda Fill sink with hot water Place silver in sink bath for approximately 5-10 minutes or longer (depending on how badly tarnished) An electrolytic reaction in the salty water will pull the tarnish off the silver Take items out of the bath, rise off and rub with soft dry cloth.
