Recycling

The prelude to recycling is “Pre-Cycling”. What this really means is take a moment to look at what your are purchasing, before you purchase it. How many layers of packaging are there? For instance breakfast cereal. There is an outer cardboard box, and yet another plastic bag inside the box......can you purchase the same type (maybe on exact brand) in just a bag? Also, eggs. HMMM you say, well stryafoam does not break down, but cardboard egg cartons can be recycled and are often already made from recycled paper. These small things can help eliminate the compilation of trash going to landfills. There are also many manufacturers that are more eco-conscious and package their materials in biodegradable containers as well and I provide a list of those soon.

Recycling correctly can sure help aid the environment in the following areas:
Greenhouse effect
CFC’s
Ozone Depletion
Air Pollution
Acid Rain
Vanishing Wildlife
Ground Water pollution

Facts/info on landfills:
Do you think that if you throw away, lets say, some vegetables they will automatically break down in a landfill? If you said yes, unfortunately you’d be wrong. Because trash is continually piled on top and compacted layer after layer, there is no air circulation, so methane gases build up. This is not only a serious detriment to the environment, but it also does nothing to alleviate the problems of trash build up. GOOD NEWS, there are little EASY ways you can help:

1.Be conscious of what you are purchasing. Can you find similar items with less packaging or buy products from manufacturers who use biodegradable packaging.

2.Before you throw something in your trash bin, think for a second....can it be recycled or can I use it for something else? (Re-purpose stuff!) I use yogurt cups for rinsing out my paint brushes.

3.Do you have a small space in your yard to start a compost bin? (See composting tab for EASY set up and use. You can use vegetable waste, egg shells, coffee grounds, even torn up non-glossy newspaper! This way you provide yourself with FREE organic supplements for your plants.

4.Check with your local trash company to see what can be recycled, if they offer only small limited items that can be recycled, see if there are other ways to dispose of items they don’t accept.
